What I always suggest is setting down with your hubby to be and see what you BOTH want regarding your big day. Once that is established, its time to get your “maid of honor” and your bridesmaids lined up… and let the fun begin!! This is the time for you gals to really enjoy. Cut pictures out of magazines, collect scrape of materials that you plan to use… put it all on your board. Make notes as well. Planning and organization are key to making things run smoothly further down the line. Utilize the internet… search places like theknot.com or brides.com; they have a ton of information, message boards and forums. Getting a binder and a checklist would be a great first step, as well. You don’t have to buy one of those big wedding planning books (they are useless and too expensive, in my opinion). You could just get a regular three-ring binder and put a checklist and some loose-leaf paper in it. As for the checklist, there are a lot of free checklists available online. If that one doesn’t work for you, you can just Google “wedding checklist” and find one that suits you. The most important things to do first are: book the church and the reception hall. Unfortunately, that means choosing a date (which is hard to do, I know). Once those two things are done, the rest will come pretty easily. Churches and halls are often booked two years in advance, so it’s important that you lock in your date asap. Also, since you are getting married in the Catholic Church, you will need to set up your first appointment with your priest so you can schedule your classes and meetings, etc. It’s also important to set a budget for the big day and beyond. Has anyone, such as your parents offered to pay for part of the wedding? If not, if you’d like some etiquette help regarding asking them. So sit down with them or your to-be in-laws and see what they are willing to help the two of you with. The next thing you might want to do is request a guest list with addresses from your parents and your fiance parents. I know it seems a bit early to ask this, but you’d be surprised how many people drag their feet on this; thus, makes the bride goes CRAZY! Next, you might want to figure out who will be in your bridal party and ask them to be in your wedding. If you have someone who is a bit short on cash, this will give her enough time to save her money. Other than that, you can just follow your checklist and try to accomplish each point as soon as you can. Like I said, the earlier you start getting things done, the less stress you’ll have. Some things to keep in mind: Although you will probably need to bend on a few things, don’t forget that this is YOUR wedding! Try not to let the many opinions of others get you down. YOU are the boss! Have your fiance help! One good task to put him on would be the honeymoon plans. This will keep him busy and make him feel like he’s doing something useful regarding the wedding planning. Get your girls to help! The whole purpose of a bridesmaid is to support the bride. Ask one of them to look into halls, the other to shop for guest gifts, the other to find a photographer, etc. They will probably like feeling needed and their efforts will take some of the load off of you. But, if you put them to work, don’t forget to get them a very nice “thank you” gift. Relax and have fun. The Bible as states that mankind is preferred over the angels in His eyes. We are told in most spiritual literature that they are the messengers and guardians from God. In our history and in the Bible, they have always played an important role. The Bible tells us that it was angel Gabriel that came to the Virgin Mary and announced to her that she had been chosen by God to bear His son, the Christ, and to name him Jesus. Some angels help us and protect us from harm as well, and are titled Guardian Angels. So why do we need a messenger or a guardian angel? I do not have the answers to this, but the Bible tells us that none of those who contacted The Living God could look upon him. So perhaps the angels are there so we can see God through their eyes. God so loves us that He not only answers our prayers, but also sends us angels to protect us from harm and evil. We are in a time of a lot of change on this earth, and some say that we are in the end times because of the wars, Christian persecution, and natural disasters that are going on in the present day, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and hurricanes that we are experiencing at a more than normal rate from our past history; and the reported appearances of angels seems to be on the rise as well. Perhaps people are praying to God more with our needs being so great these days? Angels have always been there for us, but do not intercede without invitation because this would interfere with our free will. But we can never forget that God is paramount, for without him neither mankind nor angels would exist. By JoAnn Hines I’ll be the first to admit I not much for dieting as you probably guessed from reading last week “Beer Profits Drop Could it be the Packaging?”. I do watch my weight, exercise daily and try to eat well balanced nutritious meals, But I’m still tempted though by products that say thin, slim, low calorie or even diet (yikes) on the package hoping to find a product that actually tastes good or resembles the real thing. I found a fun and interesting product while researching for this article “Skinny Cow, chocolate fudge ice cream bars.” Sounds great and delicious too bad its only available in the UK. http://www.skinnycow.co.uk/ Outside of the obvious diet products, I did manage to find Skinny Water(r), Skinny Natural Corn Chips, Skinny Root Beer and a whole host of “skinny” hair care products, some sound good enough to eat (almost). Companies like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig have traded in this space for quite a while very successfully. Versions of their packaged products now are in almost every supermarket. It takes the temptation out of overeating when everything is prepared and with a limited caloric intake. Entire new brands of packaged meals like Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice have evolved around our concerns to watch our weight yet eat delicious foods. If you remember back in November, I wrote “Food Packaging Trend 100 Calorie Snacks; Smart or Stupid?” about the host of new 100 calories snack products that tempt us to regulate our snacking and still feel like we are having a treat. Companies such as McDonalds and other fast food companies are trading on “skinny” too. Counting on the fact that now they are putting ingredients and calories on their food packaging that people will actually read it and not over eat. Wow what a concept! Every week I see new products introductions that promise me that I’ll achieve those lofty goals. You know, the emaciated razor thin model that all American women are supposed to aspire too. Yes, “skinny” sells. One of the cleverest names I have seen lately is a new product entitled Skinny Dip Beer. Of course this is an oxymoron but I am still intrigued with all the beer claims that promise “great taste with less calories.” I’ve tried a few of these and decided its not worth the effort or the calories which I’ll get from something that actually tastes good thank you. The dairy industry has taken up the skinny charge too with “Drink Yourself Skinny” claiming that dairy products boost metabolism and aid with weight loss. Does that include whole chocolate milk? It’s not enough to just slap the word “skinny” on the packaging although that may garner some consumer interest in the short run. Beware of false claims and false advertising. There are people lurking everywhere to catch you misstating your facts, including Uncle Sam. Look for more regulation to require you to actually validate the claims that you make on your product packaging. And your buyers too will be unhappy if you don’t deliver what you have promised.
